Old Liberty Baptist Church teal 1 (2)We have a history rooted deep in Russell County going all the way back to 1860 when Liberty Baptist was called the United Baptist Church. The original church building was located on Kentucky Highway 92 approximately 7 miles southwest of Russell Springs. The church bordered Reynolds Creek and sat down over a hill surrounded by a lovely wooded area. Listed among the charter members are the following names: John L. Lapsley, William Blair, James Lawless, Polly Lawless, Henry Antle, Emily Antle, Josiah Hudson and Waitsville Grider.

Soldiers engaged in the Civil War camped at this original site and the story is told that the great grandmother of one of Liberty Baptist's present members baked pies and had them delivered by a slave named Charles to the soldiers to be traded for green coffee. It is believed that this first church building, a log structure, burned sometime around the end of the Civil War.

By an agreement dated October 1,1887, the subsequent church building was used jointly by the Separate Baptist Church and the United Baptist Church. At a later date, United Baptist Church was re-named the Liberty Missionary Baptist Church. Then on April 19, 1941, full use of the church building was granted to Liberty Baptist Church.

On September 3 and 4, 1915, at Scotts Chapel Baptist Church, delegates from the Second North Concord Association and the South Cumberland River Association formed the Russell County Association of Missionary Baptists in Kentucky. Liberty Baptist Church is a charter member of this association.

Rev. J. R. Grider, who was called as pastor of Liberty Baptist Church on January 4, 1890, also served as temporary Moderator at the new Russell County Association of Missionary Baptists in its first annual session with Mt. Vernon Baptist Church on September 6-7, 1916. Other ministers who have served Liberty Baptist and the approximate years they were called are:

Liberty Baptist Church has always been a "praying" church. Copied from church minutes dated June 13, 1943, is a letter written to soldiers of the community who were serving in World War II:
"Dear Boys in Armed Forces: We, the Baptist Church of Liberty in Russell County, Kentucky, hereby notify all you boys and especially you of our community, that our daily prayers have been, are now, and will be through the duration of this war, that your lives both spiritually and physically be preserved and that you may return home safely. Done by order of the Liberty Baptist Church. J. W. Lapsley, Moderator Pro Tem, T.S. Helm, Clerk.”

Liberty Baptist Church was located at its original site on Highway 92 until 1986. Many changes had taken place through the years with a steady growth in the membership. With this growth came the need for more Bible study space and a larger sanctuary. And in spite of the picturesque location, services sometimes would have to be called off in the winter months because of the steep incline drive leading to and going from the church. Keeping these things in mind, when the First Baptist church building located on Wilson Street was vacated, Liberty's membership began to earnestly pray for the Lord's guidance in purchasing this property. After much prayer and consideration, the church body met at a special called meeting on January 12, 1986 and voted to submit a bid for the property. The bid was successful and now the "country" church down over the hill was to become a "town" church. With a membership totaling 45 when the church site was moved on April 1, 1986, the Lord has continued to bless Liberty Baptist with new members bringing its present enrollment to 289.

Now, a level, smoothly-paved parking lot replaces that steep incline entrance and all new members at Liberty Baptist Church are baptized in the sanctuary baptistery rather than Reynolds Creek. New LBC tealThe Lord closed a door on this little country church building for the members of Liberty, but He has opened a much larger door for them on the corner of Wilson Street and Lakeway Drive. Even though many things were left behind when Liberty Baptist moved into town, God graciously allowed its members to bring with them a humble spirit and a great love and concern for others. And for that, we are all richly blessed!
